The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) published the No. 45717 Government Gazette, which was about the issuance of certificates of compliance for electromagnetic compatibility for manufacturers on Jan3, 2022. The announcement mentioned the background that how the Authority and the SABS cooperated to manage the issuance of Electromagnetic Interference/Compatibility (EMI/EMC) CoCs in South Africa since they entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Mar30, 2016, and advised manufacturers, suppliers, distributors and retailers to comply with the EMC CoC requirements for their non-telecommunications electrical and electronic equipment. The No. 45717 Government Gazette also specified that the SABS-authorized A-Labs have the priority to obtain EMC COC certificates.

The Electromagnetic Interference/Compatibility (EMI/EMC) CoCs of South Africa are applicable to the electronic equipment which contain the components like Electronic Circuit Board, Motor, Driver/Rectifier, Commutator Motor and Oscillator Clock, which have electromagnetic emissions and therefore must receive Conformance Assessment. The products include the Information Technology Equipment (ITE), Household appliances, electric tools and similar apparatus, Sound and television broadcast receivers and associated equipment, Electrical lighting and similar equipment, and so on.   As the Authority and the SABS will collaborate in carrying out market surveillance activities to ensure continuous compliance in the market,  BTL advises to obtain the EMC CoCs for the electrical and electronic equipment that does not have radio frequency modules.
