Most electric appliances continue to use electricity even when turned off or in “standby” mode. In order to reduce the energy consumption of electrical appliances, Since 2008 the EU has had in place internal market rules, which is Commission Regulation (EC) No 1275/2008, setting minimum efficiency requirements on “turned off” and “standby” mode. And the regulation was updated in 2013 to cover the standby of network-connected devices (“networked standby”), namely COMMISSION REGULATION (EU) No 801/2013. That regulation covers a very large number of different products (around 5 billion units in use across the EU).
Recently on April 17th, the European Commission announced the new Directive (EU) 2023/826 for the requirements related to ''standby'' to further reduce the energy consumption of electrical equipment on "off" or "standby" mode; at the same time, it abolished Simple set-top box Ecodesign Directive (EC) No 107/2009.
