TISI is the national standards organization for Thailand, established under the Ministry of Industry by virtue of the Industrial Product Standards Act B.E. 2511.According to the Act, TISI has, as its governing body, the INDUSTRIAL PRODUCT COUNCIL which controls its policy, sets the priority of standards to be prepared, arbitrates and awards licenses under certification scheme.

Recently, TISI has introduced two new standards for secondary cells and battery packs listed as follow.

1. TISI Standard: TIS 62133 Part 1-2565

SECONDARY CELLS AND BATTERIES CONTAINING ALKALINE OR OTHER NON-ACID ELECTROLYTES - SAFETY REQUIREMENTS FOR PORTABLE SEALED SECONDARY CELLS, AND FOR BATTERIES MADE FROM THEM, FOR USE IN PORTABLE APPLICATIONS - PART 1: NICKEL SYSTEMS

2. TISI Standard: TIS 62133 Part 2-2565

Standard Name:

SECONDARY CELLS AND BATTERIES CONTAINING ALKALINE OR OTHER NON-ACID ELECTROLYTES - SAFETY REQUIREMENTS FOR PORTABLE SEALED SECONDARY CELLS, AND FOR BATTERIES MADE FROM THEM, FOR USE IN PORTABLE APPLICATIONS - PART 2: LITHIUM SYSTEMS

Two newly announced standards correspond to the IEC international standards IEC 62133-1 Edition 1.0 (2017) and IEC 62133-2 Edition 1.1 (2021), with essentially the same content. These two standards will replace the previous TIS 2217-2548. By adopting the IEC international standards, TISI aims to enhance the safety and performance of batteries in various applications, aligning more closely with global trends.

To give manufacturers time to prepare, the two new standards released by the Thailand Industrial Standards Institute (TISI) are currently voluntary. These standards are expected to become mandatory by the end of 2024 or early 2025. Once classified as mandatory, TISI plans to provide an additional six-month transition period to help manufacturers implement the necessary processes.
