On April 26, 2023, India's Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) issued the mandatory standard IS 18112:2022 (Digital Television Receiver for Satellite Broadcast Transmission —Specification) . The primary goal of this standard is to ensure that digital televisions are capable of directly receiving free digital satellite and broadcast signals. It has been explicitly stated that this standard will be enforced starting April 25, 2025.

Compared to the current television equipment, which focuses on safety standard IS 616 only, the new standard IS 18112 introduces numerous additional requirements. These include the need for products to support DVB-S & S2 for receiving free-to-air digital satellite television, compliance with EMC IS/CISPR 32 to ensure electromagnetic compatibility, compatibility of interfaces, as well as various other specifications and performance requirements. To help manufacturers better understand and implement the new standard, India recently released more detailed implementation guidelines for IS 18112. Below is a summary of the key points from the implementation guidelines:

1.  Mandatory Implementation Date for IS 18112:2022:

As per the earlier announcement, the mandatory enforcement date is April 25, 2025.

2.  Points to Note:

(1)  Once mandatory, all televisions must comply with IS 18112:2022 (Digital Television Receiver for Satellite Broadcast Transmission —Specification) and IS 616:2017 (Safety Requirements).

(2)  IS 18112 and IS 616 share the same R-number.

(3)  Applications conforming only to IS 616 will continue to be accepted until March 25, 2025, one month before IS 18112 enforcement.

(4)  After IS 18112 becomes mandatory, applications submitted under IS 616 alone will be automatically rejected.

(5)  Post-enforcement, models that comply only with IS 616 will be deleted. If no models or ongoing applications are associated with the R-number at that time, the R-number will also be canceled.

3. BIS Marking:

Once certified under IS 18112, products must display the BIS mark in accordance with the following requirements:

(1)  The marking must reflect compliance with IS 616/IEC 60065 and IS 18112.

(2)  Only one R-number should be displayed.

(3）Refer to the example shown below.
