India is set to enforce a new standard for household and similar use adapters, upgrading the existing IS 302 (Part 1):2008 to IS 302 (Part 1):2024 / IEC 60335-1:2020.

According to the latest official notice, the mandatory enforcement date, initially scheduled for February 23, 2025, has now been postponed to February 23, 2026. 

BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) has issued detailed implementation guidelines for the transition to the new standard, summarized as follows:

1. Acceptance of Applications Based on the New Standard

BIS will begin accepting certification applications based on the new standard one month before the enforcement date of February 23, 2026.

2. Requirements for Certifications Based on the Old Standard During the Transition Period

During the transition period, for projects still under processing with the old standard, applicants must submit an undertaking confirming that they will switch to the new standard before the enforcement date. After the enforcement date, BIS will no longer issue certificates based on the old standard.

3. Updating of Certificates Based on the Old Standard

After the enforcement date, all certificates issued under the old standard will become invalid. Therefore, applicants should ensure timely updates to the new standard by:

  - Commissioning a BIS-certified laboratory to test the main model according to the new standard and submitting a complete test report.

  - Declaring in the undertaking that series models have also been updated to the new standard.
