On June 9, 2025, the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) of Thailand issued an official announcement stating that type approval and importation of equipment supporting only 2G or 3G technologies will be terminated.
Effective Date: June 30, 2025
NBTC will only accept type approval applications for 2G/3G-only equipment until the effective date. After this date, such products will no longer be eligible for NBTC type approval (e.g., Class B). In addition, self-labeling authorization and label purchases for 2G/3G-only devices will be completely discontinued. Importation of such equipment will also be allowed only until the effective date, after which it will be prohibited from entering the Thai market.
Notes:
1. Devices that support 2G/3G along with other cellular technologies (e.g., 4G or 5G) will continue to be accepted for type approval.
2. Previously certified 2G/3G products can still be sold and used in the Thai market.
This policy is expected to significantly impact the development of new products that still rely on legacy cellular modules. It also reflects Thailand’s strong commitment to accelerating network modernization and 5G deployment.
