For a long time, certification testing for the EU Sub-1G band (SRD, 25 MHz to 1000 MHz) required the combined use of two standards: ETSI EN 300 220-2 and EN 300 220-1. With the release of the new version ETSI EN 300 220-2 V3.3.1 in March 2025, this landscape has undergone a major transformation: the new version has integrated the content of the original EN 300 220-1, becoming a standalone standard that no longer requires cross-referencing.

To help companies quickly grasp the key points of the new regulations, the BTL team has summarized 14 critical changes in this update for industry reference:

1. Expanded Scope of Application

Restrictions on analogue modulation voice transmission equipment have been removed. Such equipment can now be included within the scope of the new standard.

2. Tightened Test Conditions for Maximum e.r.p. Power Spectral Density

New testing requirements under extreme test conditions have been added, moving beyond tests under only normal conditions.

3. New Transmitter Frequency Stability Requirement

Applicable to all transmitters, specifying test methods, limits, and conformity assessment.

4. Transmitter Spectrum Mask at Permitted Frequency Band Edges Established as Independent Test

Separated from the original Out-of-Band (OOB) emissions test, it is now an independent test item. This item applies to all transmitters and is only required under normal test conditions.

5. Deletion of Adaptive Power Control Requirement

This item is no longer a mandatory test requirement.

6. Clarified Test Procedures for FHSS Equipment

Test procedures for Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum systems have been added; manufacturers can no longer declare conformity themselves.

7. Expanded Applicability of Receiver Sensitivity

Now applies to all receivers, enhancing device interoperability and reliability.

8. New Receiver Dynamic Range Test

Applicable to all receivers, assessing the input signal range between the minimum sensitivity level and the maximum input signal power.

9. New Adjacent Channel Selectivity Test

Specifies test methods, limits, and conformity assessment to improve device anti-interference capabilities.

10. New Receiver Spurious Response Rejection Test

Applicable to all receivers, strengthening the evaluation of suppression capabilities against undesired signals.

11. New Receiver Intermodulation Rejection Test

Applicable to all receivers using band D or band J in Table 4 of the standard, or other bands where channel spacing is specified in NRI, evaluating performance in multi-signal environments.

12. Tightened Normal and Extreme Test Temperature Ranges

Extreme temperature conditions are notably more stringent. Indoor equipment must cover the range of 0°C to +45°C, while outdoor equipment must cover -20°C to +70°C.

13. New Polite Spectrum Access Timing Parameters Test

Test methods are clearly defined; manufacturers cannot declare conformity independently.

14. New Harmonised Permitted Frequency Band K0

The frequency band ranges from 862 MHz to 863 MHz, expanding available spectrum resources.

The new version, ETSI EN 300 220-2 V3.3.1, was officially published in the Official Journal of the European Union (OJ) on December 11, 2025, and will become mandatory from June 11, 2027. Upon this date, the old OJ version (ETSI EN 300 220-2 V3.1.1) will be officially withdrawn.
