U 5725–5875 MHz Band Not Yet Open for RLAN Use, Still Limited to SRDs and Industrial Applications
On 14 May 2025, the Official Journal of the European Union (OJEU) officially listed EN 301 893 V2.2.1 as the harmonised standard for RLAN equipment operating in the 5 GHz range.
However, according to the latest amended version of the ERC Recommendation 70-03, published by CEPT on 14 February 2025, the 5725–5875 MHz range is currently designated for:
• Non-specific Short Range Devices (SRDs) under EN 300 440
• Wireless Industrial Applications (WIA) under EN 303 258
Notably, the allocation does not include Radio Local Area Networks (RLANs) such as Wi-Fi.
While the current amendment to ERC Recommendation 70-03 stops short of expanding RLAN use to the 5725–5875 MHz band, but EN 301 893 V2.2.1 as the harmonised standard for RLAN equipment operating in the 5 GHz range which opens the door for future consideration.
Until CEPT/European Commission decision on reallocating the 5725-5875 MHz band, however, manufacturers and operators must continue to comply with EN 300 440 / EN 303 258, ensuring that devices in the 5725–5875 MHz band are limited to non-specific SRDs and industrial wireless applications.
